I owe money to the gov. Can I still qualify for financial aid?

I attended college back in 2001 and I owe thousands from the financial aid. I attended for only one year! The loan has now defaulted and it’s in the hands of the government/IRS. I can’t pay the money now because I’m poor but is there any way to still get financial aid to go back to school in hopes of getting a good job?

You’ve ripped off the taxpayers once already. How about paying your own way now? Why should the tax dollars of hard working Americans go to help you when you refused to repay us for the help you’ve already received?

You should be able to go to Direct Loans and explain the situation to them. I did the same thing and once I got back into school, they were totally cool with it. And now they give me more money… Also, your Financial Aid office should be able to help out as well. Don’t do private loans, as the interest rates and fees are outrageous.

If you are defaulted, and can’t pay to get current (cure the default) you are out of luck, at least as far as government sponsored financial aid goes.
