winston-salem has a tobacco company based in it. newport, i am clueless on.

In looking around for a name for their cigarettes, tobacco companies sometimes (not always: Camel, Kool, Lucky Strikes, Old Gold, etc.) chose a nearby community.

Maybe because that is where most of the cigarette companies were originally from, or where the bulk of their tobacco was grown?
