Cities and school districts that have the highest teacher shortage often have the highest teacher turn-over and burn out. This can be due to:

-lower salaries than neighboring school districts/cities, which attracts the least experienced teachers and leadership

-overcrowded classrooms and falling-apart school sites

-high poverty and crime rates in the local neighborhood

-divided communities where the “haves” go to private school, leaving the “have nots” in the public school

Basically, pick a low-income, high-crime city. Then looks at its local school districts, perhaps by test score data. They are sure to have some openings.

Florida faces a shortage of qualified applicants for teaching positions. In fact, Florida will need nearly 32,000 new teachers for the next school year.

Louisianna is DESPERATE for highly qualified teachers that will commit to staying for 3 years while working with seriously disadvantaged urban and Katrina displaced kids. Our paper (here in MN) did a lengthy article on this not too long ago. Can’t remember the specific district, but you can get quite a bit of extra $$ in housing allowances and moving expenses!

u name the city, its short. its a profession that has lost its purpose. besides family, educators are the molders of society and its sad that very few wanna be teachers. hence the shortage as the population increases with the need for more teachers. its a lose lose situation

I’ll tell you this. The places that are short on teachers are short for a reason…you don’t want to teach there.
