Comma before and?

As we all know, we always put a comma before the word AND if the following clause is independent. For example:

Sheila went home, and Mary played with her dolls.

But do I need to put a comma if the clause following AND isn’t independent. As in:

Sheila went home and played with her dolls.

or should it be:

Sheila went home, and played with her dolls.

The first sentence has a comma because it is a compound-sentence (two sentences made into one and separated with “,and”).

“Sheila went home.”

“Mary played with her dolls.”

It could have also been written with a semicolon.

“Sheila went home; Mary played with her dolls.”

The correct punctuation in the second example is:

“Sheila went home and played with her dolls.”

No comma for the second sentence. It isn’t needed.

If the sentence read:

Sheila went home, played with her dolls, and made dinner.

You would need commas, as it was a series.
