Both ADD and ADHD are real disorders, although people with poorly behaved kids will ask if it applies.

Both disorders refer to a condition where the individual’s mind is racing so fast they cannot focus on a single thought or task. People will see such kids watching TV or playing a video game, and wonder why they can focus on that, but actually, they are creating a soothing trance which offers some relief.

Kids who have the hyperactive form of this disorder are not looking for attention by “acting out”. They fidget and pace when they are alone, they do it in school when they are seated in the back of the room and have no audience. Unlike poorly behaved kids, patients often know something is wrong, even if they do not have a name for it. They often get very upset by how much this disorder affects their relationships with parents and peers. Lastly, medication works (most of the time). The patient is given a stimulant, which has the opposite effect in their system. Correctly medicated patients do not seem drugged. They seem “normal”. The reason they may tell others that they feel sluggish is because to them, “normal” is not what they are used to.

They are labels to help teachers and others understand why a student may have some difficulties learning and why they may cause difficulties for them as well. They are also money makers. Only ADD is really a disorder, if you ask me, which you didn’t. ADHD is just an excuse lots of lazy and possibly mean parents grab onto when dealing with a child who doesn’t do every little thing precisely the way they want.

ADD-Attention Deficit Disorder. It means the patient has lack of focus, or has difficulty keeping on one task. Sometimes, if they were seen at many times during a year, the diagnosis might change…coz it’s possible to only sometimes be that way for natural reasons. Most younger people with the diagnosis have it due to learning difficulties and nutrition issues.

ADHD is completely different. It means the person is hyper in addition to paying no attention. Usually it’s said something is overstimulating them, causing them to act out a bit, either with bad behaviors or with OCD behaviors (in case of those who are well behaved, for instance. It’s possible not to be a Bart Simpson and have this. You could be very insistent on things being done a certain way coz it forces you to pay attention…and relieves stress from overstimulation.)

Few people diagnosed with ADHD actually have it.

Many people have already mentioned what these two mean, but I thought I would just add some experience. As a teacher I have seen both ends of the spectrum. Sometimes children are just children, or have some other need but are labeled ADD or ADHD and medicated. I’ve had some of these children who are over medicated and practically sit in their own zoned out world all day long. Yet, I have had students who have completely turned around for the better after medication and really benefit from it. This past year, a student went from being loud, distracted, and depressed to being my number one student and the happiest little boy. (Voted Best Writer and Best Smile from classmates).

As a teacher, you are not legally allowed to suggest medication or dosage of medication.

I just wanted to clear up the common statement that kids don’t need medication. Although I am never an advocate for medication, for some it has changed their life!

If you are thinking of medicating a child, ask a doctor and they ca even do trials for a few weeks to find what works best. Get a recommendation so you will find a doctor you trust.

ADD stands for attention deficit disorder. It basically means a person has a hard time paying attention, their attention may shift all over and they get easily distracted from what they are doing. It is not actually called ADD anymore, now they simply go by ADHD, but the H part may or may not be a factor. It means Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It is like what I said before except when you have hyperactivity to go along with it, you get very fidgety and have a hard time sitting still or keeping quite. I have ADHD, and am I Special Education Teacher. It is difficult to manage when you are younger and can really affect you in school, but as you get older you learn to handle it better. There are also medications you can take that help. Some people take them, others do not. They help you calm down and focus, but sometimes they can make you sick. For the girl who said ADHD does not exist, she is obviously not educated about the topic. It very much exists. Describing it as a person who have it, it is like you are constantly going. I know I can do about a million things at once while having 5 conversations I don’t remember having, and still do just fine. I am working on my master’s degree right now, and still find myself twirling in my chair, doodling in my notebook, playing games on my phone, coloring my shoes….and I want to pay attention to the teacher. I simply cannot. It can make life really difficult for you espcially school. Well I know I rambled, but that’s what we do. Hope this helps.

Oh and i just saw on here someone sad ADD is paying no attention to anything at all…NOT TRUE….you pay attention to everything! The leaves blowing outside the window, the kid next to you crinkling his paper. The bug crawling accross the carpet, the teacher, the other students, the buzz of the lights. It’s basically sensory overload…you pay attention to everything and it all gets jumbled up toegether. You cannot ignore anything. I have it I know.

I have A.D.D. I feel out of place in school . everything bores me. it sucks because not many things keep my interest. good games bore me, good TV shows, even relationships. it makes it worse that I block myself from society. medication only works to a point and like others on here have said, it makes your feel slowed down or dumbed down. I can’t even sit while a loading pops up on a screen. I have to switch to tv or music to compensate. but knowledge comes easy to me. my teachers get made when I sleep all through class but get straight a’s on all my tests. I cant do homework, or class work. the only thing that attracts my attention for a while is anime. but that now bores me.
