The two above answers are correct, check with the school to see if they have a set form. If not, send letter thanking them for accepting you, but that you can’t accept their offer due to financial constraints.

Before you do this, though, call the financial aid office to make absolutely sure that there’s nothing they can do to help you with the Cost of Attendance. Most schools have programs for the finacially strapped, even if your circumstances change after you matriculate.

You might be best to call the Registrar or Bursar’s office first to find out how to proceed. They might have a specific form that you need to fill out and submit. If not, and you still want to send a letter, a simple letter stating your reason for withdrawing would fit the bill. Be prepared for the possibility that you might be charged fees for withdrawing at this date. Also, you could consider deferring your start date until you are able to better manage the costs. You don’t need to cancel your enrollment for this.

I don’t work at Hoffstra but I do work for another University. You don’t have to send anything fancy or complicated. Just send them a one sentence letter stating your name, address, social security number and your intention to withdraw for the upcoming year. Include your phone number if they need to contact you for any other reason. Call their office first though and let them know you will follow up with a letter.
