First off, vet techs are paid very little. So if you are looking for a lucrative career, being a vet tech is not for you. Every vet clinic has different expectations of their vet techs but some of the common responsibilities include assisting the vet with exams. This can include help restraining animals, drawing blood, putting in catheters, removing sutures, taking temps etc. You may also be asked to process samples such as cells counts on blood or checking fecal material for parasites. You may also have to serve as the receptionist for the clinic, which includes answering the phone at the front desk, scheduling appointments, collecting payments, etc. Depending how what type of clinic you work at and how much experience you have, you may have to assist with some surgeries. Not necessarily be in the OR during the surgery but my might be asked to prep the animals and care for them after.

As far as preparing, some colleges have vet tech programs where you will get a 4 year degree and then become a certified/registered vet tech. (different states use different terminology but it all equals the same thing). Being a certified vet tech may earn you more money in salary but it probably won’t be much. Also, if you are certified, you will probably have more responsibilities. That being said, you do not have to be certified to be a vet tech. I know some vet techs that never went to college. They go a lot of on the job training. Obvisouly, they get paid less than certified vet tech are you may have a harder time finding a job, but it is possible.

If you are looking to go to college, look to see what colleges have vet tech programs. Talk to some of people in that department. Also try talking to some local veterinarians and vet techs. I’m sure they will be more than happy to give you some advice.
