Social Security Number to use vs. Real one??

Isn’t there a Social Security number that we are allowed to use when we prefer not to use our own? I don’t mean just making one up, I mean an actual ‘generic’ one for all to use.

I heard of this long ago and had written it down, but..who knows where it is these days 🙂

I will be moving soon and really detest utilities using our SS# and asking for it when I call to get an answer about my account. I would like to move and start fresh with a different SS rather than my real one.

Thank you!!

There is not a generic social security number to use.

Companies are supposed to follow strict practices to protect your SSN.

When you fill out an application, utility companies typically need the social security number to either check your credit or comply with local/state/federal laws for monitoring purposes (homeland security type stuff). After that, no customer service person should ever ask for your full social security number. They should only have access to the last 4 digits.

Other than that, never give out your social security number over the phone.

You might can form an LLC using your name and only submit your tax id number; however, you will still have to use your SSN to form the company and receive the tax id number.
