Comma help!!?

Are these commas placed correctly? Do I need them at all? If not, why?

“She was able to save more money, having picked up etxra hours at work.”

“He was an excellent student, following his older brother’s lead.”

I know if it starts with the participial phrase, yes, a comma follows. But, what about these?

Thanks!

First of all, I think they’re both backwards.

Having picked up extra hours at work she was able to save more money.

Following his older brother’s lead he became an excellent student.

This also illiminates the commas.

When in doubt don’t use a comma. It’s better to NOT use a comma than to use it wrong!

A STRONG sentence is one that STRESSES the point quickly.

HAVING PICKED UP EXTRA HOURS AT WORK is the main point that tells HOW SHE WAS ABLE TO SAVE MORE MONEY.

Well, Arugula ( which is a herb that I love)

I am a Brit and we Brits love our commas. Every one should stay. However the American amongst us are less comma-mad.

All those sentences read well and are well contructed.
