Your honest opinion?

My cousin wants to ask: Is it possible for me to thrive and get into a good university if I go to a inter-city “Ghetto” high school.

I’ve transferred into a new high school because it sounded intriguing due to the fact that it specializes in education for the heath career track. The problem is that I visited it and saw that most of the students there are not only inter-city but had been kicked out of their old schools for fighting and drugs. I’m worried because I’ve always been a good student, and I don’t want this choice to affect my future. Also due to the fact that I can be described as “preppy” or “whitewashed” due to my upbringing and I do not want this to hinder me socially.

It is too late to reverse my decision now, and what adds to the problem is that it’s a VERY new school [it just opened this year] and the students are going to be like somewhat guinea pigs. Is it possible to get into a good school if I am an excellent student in a bad school?

You most definitely can get into a good university no matter what school you went to as long as you received a good education and have a good guidance counselor to help you with the college process. Colleges don’t care what school you went to they are more interested in your grades, act/sat and subject test grades. what a way to impress a college by showing them that you can do well no matter environment you had to learn in. When you get to the school and some time has passed and you feel that you aren’t getting what you need as far as education or you can’t take the nonsense and it is keeping you from learning then by all means move to a better school but if you can thrive there despite the types of students who are there then go for it and be the top student there and then choose your university.
