I could list a gazillion themes just by looking around the room I’m in. However…you need to take into consideration the school you attend and what makes it so special? I was a yearbook adviser for many years and the best yearbook was the one that reflected the multicultural aspect of the student population. Another year was the first year of the new school – that one was easy – just think of a catchy title or phrase that sums up your idea. The first year title of the yearbook was “Experiment” – Get a good broad title, don’t narrow it down until you start to do the layout and carrying through the theme of experiment: the senior class was the periodic table except it had their photos in it. We made that an autograph page. We brainstormed ideas that connected the experiment thing to formula (class choices, electives) , catalyst (teachers?), bunsen burner (what’s hot at your school?), beakers (containers), the elements gold and silver (class rings?) –
I just saw a great idea for photos if you know photoshop real well: outline the people in white, put them on a separate layer and throw a drop shadow on each layer. Gives dimension like a movie does. Real cool.
Good luck and if you are the editor get ready to eat, breathe and LIVE yearbook. It isn’t over until the book is in your hands! Have fun —
