Would this make writing a report on a person better for students?

Instead of just writing one long report on someone from history like Malcom X, Mother Teresa, etc.Have the students do a comparison and contrast paper on someone famous from the pass of someone famous today like for example( Martin Luther King and Russell Simmons). Would students find that more fun and interesting.

Well, i’m 22 and I think it’s a good idea to a comparison of famous people from the past and present to see what they have in common and what the difference between them. It’s alot of thinking but should be easy and kinda fun to me.

Well those are two types of reports. The first doing a long report on one person is not as challenging as doing a compare/ comparison paper. The comparison paper requires a hire level of thinking. I think a more intelligent student would find the comparison paper more interesting. A student that is still at the acquiring knowledge level, may be overwhelmed by a compare paper. It all depends on the grade level you are speaking of and the knowledge level of the student.

In today’s classroom a teacher is taught to diversify the lesson and to challenge all students. The best option is to let the students choose or to ascertain the level the student is on and then assign a variety of different assignments that challenge each student appropriately.

Famous people have little relevance in everyday lives. Why not have the students interview and write a paper on someone in their community who holds a job that interests them as a potential career. Find out what the job is really like and what it takes to get hired.

I think it’s more interesting to write a paper comparing 2 people. I have done it last year for African American Heritage class, and I enjoyed it every bit. You do it on two people who were in the same field. I did mines on Amiri Baraka (who I didn’t know nothing about), and Langston Hughes.

Yes, anytime you can get students to connect history to something current and relevant in their lives, it’s a good thing.
