Would anyone like to clarify something for me?

How does someone manage to make going to college a full-time career; including obtaining their Masters and PhD, continuous without taking a break and have an income to support themselves and pay for college?

Not sure if I stated the question correctly or if my question is clear but hopefully someone will know what I am trying to get at and provide an answer to it.

they either have

parents that pay for it,

a trust fund,

a job on the side,

a research or teaching job at the university,

or they have grants.

Oh, yes, some specialties are so in demand that companies will pay for all the college you want if you agree to work for them for a certain number of years.

it is also possible to have more than one of those, in combination.

Not such thing as a free lunch. Family, significant other, scholarships, and sometimes there are benefit packages in the workplace that will reimburse college cost to families who kids are in college. Living with relatives or friends can cut down on college expenses so that the minimum amount of work is needed to get by.

Scholorships, Burseries, Working as a Teachers Assistant, Grants, Research Assistantships. You can basically pay your entire Masters Degree that way, including money for housing and food.

I have often wondered the same thing. When someone says ‘I am a full time student’ as you have described I can’t help but wonder first how do they pay for it and second what the hell are they studying????

A ton of loans. You work your butt off in the summer (making $$), and then during the school year you try and work a few hours (if you can, between 10-20) for some spending money. Other than that you take out tons and tons of loans to pay for it – in hopes that you’ll be graduating and making enough money to repay them back quickly. It’s an opportunity cost…

Well, such a person could have rich relatives paying for things. Or they could be receiving grants, scholarships, and loans to pay for everything. Or they could have some kind of job that you don’t know about – like ebay sales, or web site income, or some kind of scam, etc. going on.

i see this a lot, and usually these people are funded by a parent or a scholarship. Their life is pretty much built around school.

So, for these people to take a break is pretty much like social suicide.
