You have great academic and extracurricular qualifications. I’ll suggest to you two things:
1. Write the best personal statement possible. The UCs really put a lot of emphasis on it. If you have overcome adversity (e.g. poverty, hardship, etc.) to achieve all of these things, that could make a great essay. Be creative and do your best. If mechanical engineering is your passion, write about it. Make sure you get input from a variety of smart people about your essay before you finally apply.
2. Apply undeclared. To the UCs in particular, and probably to Cal Poly, it is important to get in first and declare your major later, since demand for particular majors can cause you to be rejected. Of course, you know what you want to major in, but applying undeclared isn’t going to hurt you, and it can help you get in.
Be sure to have some backup choices, although your qualifications are great. I hope you get into a college of your choice.
May God bless you.
No one can tell you if you get in or not except that college and that means applying to that college to get that answer. Talk to our guidance counsler or one at the college for more information on what each requires, expects, etc. As each will have its own list of wants and don’t wants.
Good luck, being an engineer you’ll tinker for life. I am no longer an engineer but I still tinker, draw machines, etc. Even making my own water paddle wheel that will generate electricity for free for myself.
My dad was a mechanical engineer. (He would have been 84.)
He graduated from RIT.
Long answer: nope
