Why is a group of crows called a “Murder of crows”?

Do you know the origins of any other strange group names?

Apparently, the use of murder to mean a group of crows is poetic but not scientific. The reference isn’t noted in the OED. But it is noted in An Exaltation of Larks by James Lipton.
