Because the whole concept of “rights and duties of citizens” is considered, I don’t know… out of date. We still get all the flag waving and “vote! vote! vote!” through elementary and middle school, we’re still given a basic idea of what “civic duty” means. “Government” is a required class for many high schools, so students are still learning how the government works. We just don’t really call it “civics” anymore. And like someone else said, maths and sciences are considered more important (to the schools for funding and such, not necessarily to the students’ education).

I think “civics” has certain connotations, too. It gets tricky teaching “ethics” in relation to government without going into religion and the whole church-state mess, especially these days. And maybe it’s just me (and I’m definitely a product of my times, like anyone) but the whole idea of “rights and duties of citizens” sounds very… I don’t know, overly (fanatically) patriotic or nationalistic… the little voice of rebellious youth in the back of my head wants to say something about the government brainwashing children… but, hey, I’m young. And I had a very cynical AP Government teacher.

evaluate this danger: you’re counseled on the fundamentals of constitutional regulation and US government. yet ought to you be blind to how the Bush administration has replaced the way our federal government is administered, and how it has disregarded of the form and different regulations and precedents? the administrative branch HAS improve into the main effective branch, extremely under Bush and it has in lots of cases usurped the regulation making capacity of Congress. Bush pushed the Patriot Act and he and his neoconservative operatives in the government have been given the Republican Congress to rubber stamp it and a great sort of different expenses. If a invoice a approach or the different crossed Bush’s table that he did no longer like, such because of the fact the only proscribing the torture of prisoners and detainees, he’d situation a “signing fact” wherein he reported that he would not enforce the invoice the way it grew to become into written. This actuality on my own could marvel everybody who has examine the ordinary words of Article I of the form. The neoconservative’s theory at the back of the signing fact is that we’ve not got a three section government the place each and every branch balances and tests the surplus of the the others; particularly we’ve a “unitary government”. i urge you to make certain some thing with regard to the unitary government or the capacity grabs of the Bush administration. Then ask your self whether the highschool little ones get the common gist of what Bush and his team have been doing for the previous 6 years.

Its often combined with history classes. Each state decides what subjects schools are required to teach. Many states put civics in with their history standards. Lately, more of an emphasis has been placed on math and English. As time goes by, and states start testing their students in other areas, history and civics may become more stressed in our country’s school. Right now the “popular” things to stress are math and reading/writing.

Um, they do. I don’t know where you’re getting you information. I went to high school in NC, and we had to take it to graduate. It was usually taught sophomore year. It was lumped in with an economy course, and there was a state-administered final exam and everything. It’s not universal, though. I’m sure there are some schools that don’t have a Civics class, but I don’t appreciate your making a false generalization like that.

Civics is no longer offered simply because the American Educational System has lost it’s ethical compass.

I notice this effect when I am inside the classroom with students. (I am a Substitute Teacher) I notice that the students’ roots of Ethical-“rightness” is learned from off the street. 🙁

It is no longer “the Teachers’ obligation” to instill a compass of Civic training when the scope of ethics within our own borders (U.S.A.) so commonly changes.

The Teachers are so afraid that the Parents will “lower-the-boom” on them if / when the lessons differ from their Family traditions.

Civics refers to education in the obligations and the rights of the citizens.

In our current system, no one has obligations and all rights belong to groups not citizens.

probably due to no child left behind legislation………american students do ok in the social science but are very poor at math/science……….schools now tend to stress math/science over social sciences
