Why do people try to sound sophisticated by saying “clientele”?

When people talk about work I always get embarrassed for them when they talk about clientele. HELLO! They’re just customers. If you are super special, you can call them clients. But clientele? WTF? What kind of word is that? Totally sounds like a word to make the speaker sound more elite or sophisticated …

Really irks me.

I dislike a few words like that myself. ‘Utilize’ and ‘vehicle’ come to mind…Of course there are times to use those words (when ‘vehicle’ is figurative, e.g.), but most of the time, people just them to try to sound intelligent. “My vehicle is in the shop.”

Clientele refers to exclusive clients of a business. For instance, a shop caters to exclusive clientele.

It is more professional and alludes to holding the clients in high esteem. I see it as a respectful word. Why not use sophisticated words when they fit the situation? Why so defensive about a higher level of speaking?
