IR is quite a broad field so here is a number of decent books

Introductory textbooks:

Baylis, John, and Smith, Steve (eds), The Globalization of World Politics (preferably 3rd edition 2004)

Jackson, Robert, and Sorensen, Georg, Introduction to International Relations (preferably 2nd edition 2003)

For IR history and development:

Clark, Ian, Globalisation and Fragmentation. International Relations in the 20th Century (1997).

Dunbabin, John P.D., International Relations since 1945 (2 vols): The Cold War (1994) and The Post-Imperial Age (1994).

Keylor, William R., A World of Nations: The International Order Since 1945 (2003).

For IR theory:

Burchill, Scott, Linklater, Andrew et al., Theories of International Relations (2nd edn. 2001).

Carlsnaes, Walter, Thomas Risse and Beth Simmons, Handbook of International Relations (2002)

Nye, Joseph, Understanding International Conflicts: An Introduction to Theory and History (5th edn. 2004).

Smith, Steve, and Hollis, Martin, Explaining and Understanding International Relations (1991).

Woods, Ngaire (ed.), Explaining International Relations since 1945 (1996).

Waltz, Kenneth, Theory of International Politics (1979)
