When, why and to who Confucius said this beautiful quote?

Sadly, 90% of Confucius quotes are made up and cannot be attributed to him. Neo-Confucianists wrote down his sayings some 1500 years after his death because they felt the Chinese society was being threatened by Taoism and Buddhism. In the process, they dug up every known Chinese proverb and gave the authorship to Confucius.

The historical Confucius was greatly preoccupied with doing what’s “proper” (like Dear Abby) and attributing all rules to the authority of Heaven (“because that’s the way things work”). He’s an icon of the Chinese conformism and his quotes were used to reinforce the rigid rules of their society.

I would hope that Confucius was addressing a group of young people going out on their own for the first time. Would be beautiful words to a graduating class.
