In the US, 2nd-graders compare with the rest of the world, but by the time they graduate High school they rank 27th out of 30 industrialized Nations. The main reason for this is the teachers unions and their complete inability to teach people how to think – they just drill on lists of facts because they are lazy and inept. About 15% of public teachers cannot even pass the final in the subjects they teach, and they fight tooth and nail to prevent any testing of their ability (which is very low)…
“Smart” is not reacting, it is thinking. In math, for example, it is NOT remembering a formula to solve a problem, it is being able to figure it out when it is needed. This concept totally escapes public school teachers because all they want is a job with no “work” involved.
It is estimated that about 50% of teachers are not competent, and should be fired, but the unions will not let that happen. If you send your child to public schools, they are going to be under the influence of incompetent people.
Your very question reflects this by wanting to know about tricks and gimmacks (“food” to make you smart) rather than stimulating the mind with ideas.
Sorry, but if you cannot tell, I think public school teachers are pure trash, and responsible for the complete ruination of our children.
Reading isn’t unconventional, but it works, especially if you choose your own books because you find them interesting.
Don’t believe that only people with degrees are smart. Talk to people who seem smart to you, regardless of their diplomas. I believe many of the world’s smartest people have no formal education.
If you just want to prepare quickly for a test, I can’t help you much. But if you just want to learn in general, you have a great adventure ahead of you.
