Screen savers are good, hence the name screen saver. THey save your screen from burn-in unless you have a newer CRT monitor (those huge tube monitors). If you have an LCD either set the power options to turn off after like 30 minutes or have the screen saver on. The screen saver does use power as the monitor is still on but LCD monitors use way less energy. About the same amount as a 60 watt light bulb.
