What kind of Master’s program am I eligible for?

I have a BS in Nursing and want to pursue a graduate degree, but I DO NOT want it to be in nursing. I would prefer to get away from healthcare entirely. My question is: What Master’s degree can I go into with this background? Oh, and an MBA is mostly out of the questions as I don’t have much of a mind for business.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Almost anything as long as you have great grades, GRE or whatever entrance exams required; are VERY convincing as to why you are trying to change your course; able to show/explain how your degree in nursing helps you in whatever u pursue; have type of experience whether its volunteer or an actual job; and be passionate about what you are pursuing.

I suggest do some research on subjects/jobs that are of interest and look at what degrees are required.

Wow that’s a great question. I wrote down a whole answer and realized it was just not an answer. I’m starring your question so I can think more about it. What were your college minors? Any other “long suits” in your transcript that could be useful?

I’m looking at the previous answer and wondering if you had physical chemistry or inorganic chemistry or analytical chemistry as part of the BSN or whether you just had general chem and organic. If you just had general chem and organic, then you’ve got a long way to go before you’ll be ready for grad school.

I liked Mom’s answer (below). Even though some of her suggestions seem health-science oriented, probably many of them are entry points for careers that will leave direct contact with patients and approach management or consultancy or advocacy type jobs from the inside (which means you do not necessarily need an MBA). That’s worth thinking about in my opinion.

“Nursing” in itself as a major is not well-known to anyone outside *nursing* circles. Focus instead on what courses (chem? bio? nutrition?) you had as an undergrad & enjoyed. Try to reinvent yourself. Ask yourself what do you see yourself doing & enjoying … in 5 yrs … 10 yrs …

Did you have lots of psych courses? Could you see yourself as a counselor/psychologist? Therapist? Guidance counselor?

Did you love chemistry? Could you see yourself *teaching* high school or college chemistry? This will be a big demand in the near future as more & more chem profs retire.

Was nutrition fun? Could you picture yourself as a dietician, either in a hospital or LTC setting; or as an independent contractor (big bucks here); or counseling diabetics or anorexics?

Are you working as a nurse now? Have you considered teaching nursing? In many areas of the country, potential nursing students are being turned away from nsg programs due to *not enough nursing instructors.*

There is a such thing as an MBA with an emphais on healthcare. Some of those folks end up as SNF/LTC facilty administrators … a change of pace from what you’re doing now as a nurse.

Good luck!
