Biotech drugs and large scale production of the new drugs is a growing field with plenty of high tech companies in USA.
Companies are looking for the scientists who can help reduce the cost, reduce fermentation time, improve yield, and separate the final product after the fermentation.
You can also work for the companies that make these types of fermentors and you can improve their design or help customize to meet client’s need.

The jobs vary widely for microbiologists. You have specifically mentioned fermentation. This is largely done in industry in many areas from food production to production of recombinant proteins for medical use or vaccines. The type of job you get will really depend on the ancillary skills you have and the type of work you prefer. If you are good at cloning and molecular biology you can work in research, if you are Good in math and engineering then industrial processes like large scale fermentation may be for you, if you like paper work then public health may be for you.
