What is the best way to brush up a resume for someone who has a degree but no prof. experience?

I’ve been busy raising my two babies- I am now ready to join the workforce, although I really don’t look it on paper. I’ve had a lot of different jobs- but nothing proffesional, I have a lot of life expereince, my BA, and a prof. appearance but my resume just doesn’t look good. Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciate!

Everyone has experience, whether they got paid for it or not, and all experience can be on a resume. All an employer really wants to know is IF you can work and are you reliable. So, that’s the kind of experience you put on the resume.

Always list everything in reverse chronological order, most recent first.

List your education first, emphazing the degree.

Then, create a category called Work Related Experience. Here you can list all professional and non paying jobs you’ve worked

After that Interests. Various hobbies, etc that might be useful for the kind of job you’re looking for.

After that, References. You probably don’t have much, but at least one reference that is not a family member would be good. Could be anyone, even an old teacher.

Good luck 🙂

This is an outstanding site which will help you prepare the best resume possible:

Be sure to include any volunteer work you have done that has helped you develop skills that are pertinent to the position you are seeking. And, life experience does count, so include that. Many employers prefer to hire people who are more mature than the typical new college graduate.

Get someone who knows absolutely nothing about your prior experience to review your resume to see if it makes sense to them. The simpler and clearer the resume, the better your chances are of getting an interview.
