what is on a spanish speaking 6yr old k-1 placement test? (Clark County, Nevada) Any example prep tests?
Question Details: The child lived in mexico but is a citizen and went to school in mexico but now the family is moving here and I want to help prepare child for the assesment test. We think the child is ready for 1st grade so we want to help the child study but the child cant speak english. We need an example placement test in spanish. Teachers please help, we only have a month to Study.

I don’t think you can do much for a non-english speaking child in a month, I taught non-english speaking children in the second grade and it took quite some time for them to learn the basics. The thing that helped my students the most was being around english speakers , I say that to say, you should really let the child be, the last thing they need to be is stressed out over a test that no doubt will put them at the very beginning regardless of what you do with them. Another thing is why would you want to quickly help this child memorize a few english words they won’t comprehend for a while. These test are designed to assess where a child is in their new language not their native language. So does it matter if this child knows all a child should know to go to first grade here but only knows it in spanish, that child will still have to start at the beginning here, remember there is no more social promotion so a child doesn’t go to the next grade just because of their age if they don’t know enough to proceed to the next grade. This child will be fine since they are coming here at a young age, so let them learn the language from the very beginning with no prep because it will only hurt them in the long run.
