what is it??

I do not know how to explain myself very well when asking this, but it is worth a shot…. What is it called when to words that mean the total opposite are used together. like Jumbo

[[Jumbo(meaning big) and Shrimp (meaning small)]].

Also can you please list me a few more examples of these??

Thanks

It’s called an oxymoron. Best example of an oxymoron is military intelligence. The 2 words just don’t go together.

oxymoron

ie: bittersweet

deafening silence

mournful optimist

1657, from Gk. oxymoron, noun use of neut. of oxymoros (adj.) “pointedly foolish,” from oxys “sharp” (see acrid) + moros “stupid.” Rhetorical figure by which contradictory terms are conjoined so as to give point to the statement or expression; the word itself is an illustration of the thing. Now often used loosely to mean “contradiction in terms.”

I think the word you are looking for is an OXYMORON – basically the first half of the word/phrase contradicts the other half.

One of the best examples will be “deafening silence” though my fav is “good morning”.
