What is it really like in a sorority? People who have been in one best to answer.?

The purpose of a sorority is to give you a definite number of friends, which appeals to people who are insecure about the number of friends they have. It also gives you a definite number of social events to which you will be automatically invited, which appeals to people who are insecure about the number of events on their social calendar — especially social events that involve a lot of men who are there for exactly one reason which is to get drunk and score.

The rest is mainly yack-yack-yacking about clothes, money, TV shows, and other things that are largely insignificant. It prepares you for a lifetime of socializing where you talk about nothing.

Your experience will definitely vary depending on the type of sorority you join. As a member of an NPHC organization I have had a great experience. When in college I gained lots of leadership experience planning programs and volunteer opportunities for my chapter. Additionally my sorority is my extended family. Now that I have graduated when I travel to different cities I always make sure to get a sorority contact and my sorority sisters always take care of me when I arrive. The sorority has also been a great professional network for me…as you probably already know, who you know is oftentimes as important as what you know, when you are applying for jobs, etc.

Not everyone that joins a sorority is insecure. I didn’t join until my junior year and I had plenty of friends by then.

Being in a sorority is a great way to network and to meet people (especially if you’re going to a school where you don’t know anybody.) There is great leadership opportunities which will look good later on a resume. You get to do fun activities such as mixers, formals, sports, community service etc. Don’t listen to the people who say that you are buying your friends or anything like that…..they probably don’t know anything about sorority life.
