What is a third level institution in Ireland and what is the difference between B. E and B.E hons degree?

I am interested in doing a degree in Ireland and would like to know the difference between attaining a Bachelor in Engineering degree (3 years) and Bachelor in Engineering (Hons) degree. Will I be able to do my masters with both the degrees? What about job prospects.

In Ireland there are levels to equate like with like.

Bachelor Ordinary is level 7

Bachelor Honours is Level 8

You need a level 8 to be able to do a masters which is a level 9.

Depending on the institute some Honours courses in engineering are five years long and some ordinary are four, so check out each college prospectus and check if it is a level 8 or 7. Remember you need the level 8 to do a masters.

Job prospects for either are very good, but Irish employers desire educated graduates with experience so you may not get a higher up job immediately but when you have a year or so experience your payscale increases dramatically.

hey man i’m doing an B.E hons in civil engineering. B.e hons is regarded higher by employers and gives the best career prospects. If you are considering doing a masters i strongly suggest you apply for B.E hons.

The system in Ireland works like this.

Once you complete secondary school you can apply for 10 courses in both Level 8 and Level 7 third level education.

If your points (grades) do not meet the required entry level to any level 8 course you will then be offered a level 7 course.

If you want the academic route i suggest you apply to an NUI (National University of Ireland).

other colleges such as I.T offer level 7 engineering certificates.

good luck.
