I’ll make some suggestions, but first of all, I’ll ask you to please contact your school to absolutely find out if there really is a required text or not, or if you’re really on your own to pick out a book. Where I currently teach offers a choice to pick between 2 books, but it’s not a “read whatever you want”. I have had students show up the first day of freshman Pre-AP English not prepared to take the quiz or start on the project because they didn’t complete the reading requirement. Also, do you know what texts you’ll be reading in class? You can choose either to read them this summer so you’ll be on top of things in class or either choose to avoid them so they’ll be as fresh/new to you as your classmates…something to consider.

Your question didn’t indicate what genre (type) of literature you enjoy or might enjoy or your reading skills, so keep that in mind when anyone offers you some suggestions. Ok, that being said here are some suggestions (some are books geared to on-level 9th graders and some are slightly more advanced. Also, try Amazon or Barnes & Noble online for summaries and reviews):

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

The Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd

The Locket by Richard Paul Evans

Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns

Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card

Summer of My German Soldier by Bette Greene

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier

The Alchemist by Paul Coelho

The Light in the Forest by Conrad Richter

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Dicey’s Song by Cynthia Voigt
