What do you think about the word “X-ray mask”?

An x-ray mask is designed to protect vulnerable parts of the body that would be unnecessarily subject to x-rays. It sounds like it’s for the head area. However, there are several parts of the body that can not be x-rayed because of the risk of cancer caused by radiation.

Firstly, “X-ray mask” is not one word, it’s two. Secondly, it means a lead-lined covering that is placed over areas that it would be preferable not to x-ray. For example, if you are a woman of child-bearing age and need a pelvic x-ray, the mask is placed over the area of your uterus, ovaries etc. to protect them from the potentially harmful effects of the x-ray.

You don’t need a mask for an X-ray.

You wear it when you are x-rayed.
