what can i do with a degree in history?

No, seriously. History majors – even over English majors – have the strongest writing and research skills and you use that in so many jobs out “in the real world.” History departments also tend to be tougher ones in most social science departments/liberal arts colleges, which says something to your future employeer – that you didn’t take a copout major.
The skills you gain as a history major are more important than the actual history itself – though entering academic/historically oriented fields is always an option.
Your opportunities are near endless and you should not fear living in a box when you graduate!
Some examples:
– law school (all of those above skills are much desired in the field of law, history is a common pre-law major)
– be a professor (love history? get your PhD in it)
– government work… also endless. You could work as a diplomat for the state department, or for numerous other agencies.
– work for a nonprofit (all of those skills are a must in non-profit activist work).
– work in historic preservation (nonprofit) or for a museum.
