The Grapes of Wrath

To Kill a Mockingbird

Catcher in the Rye

The Great Gatsby

Heart of Darkness

A Separate Peace

Plato’s Dialogs

Any and, if possible, all Shakespeare

A Tale of Two Cities

Les Miserables

The Canterbury Tales

Dante’s trilogy

The Hobbit series

Dr. Faustus

On Writing Well (Zinsser)

The Color Purple

Roots (a lengthy task)

Uncle Tom’s Cabin

Tom Sawyer

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Walden

The Republic

Frankenstein

Dracula

White Fang

Candide

The Iliad

The Odyssey

Don Quixote

Of Mice and Men

Invisible Man

A Thousand Pieces of Gold

War and Peace

Well, not even close to a hundred… but there’s my contribution. Good luck! 🙂

The high schooler has a list of books to choose from depending on grade level given to them at the end of the school year. They have too read two books for the summer to write reports in the fall.

Books that are read by high school students are determined by the local school board. They typically have 20-30 books that are approved for each grade level. Books are brought to the school board by teachers, parents, and community members. The board evaluates them and determine if they should be placed on the approved literature list. You should be able to go to your local school’s district office and get a copy. Some districts put them on-line on their web pages. There are obviously a number of books that are found on most district’s literature list. Some have been mentioned above. Hope this helps.
