what are some good public colleges/ Universities?

I am not sure who has the best programs in Virginia, though. I think you will have to do some research at these schools to find out who has the best programs you want. Even though the four schools I listed are competitive, I know sometimes some individual programs won’t be as good. For instance, I hear the W&M’s psychology and sociology majors are a joke (since all of the other majors have to work their butts off). UVA’s education school is not that great.
I think most of the D.C. schools are private, unfortunately. So that leaves just New York and Virginia for you.
There are no “Public Ivies” in NY or DC.
(Syracuse and Georgetown are private).
However, if you plan to teach at the primary or secondary school level, it is usually a good idea to attend a public college in the state in which you plan to live afterwards. This is because state universities will prepare you to attain teaching certification IN THAT STATE.
So if you plan to live in NY, any SUNY school will do.
