University of Chicago and Washington University in St. Louis?

I know that many prospective students inquire about university admissions and that it tends to get redundant but, I really want to hear the opinions of anyone who has attended either universities or is familiar with their admissions processes.

I am a soon-to-be senior in high school.

I have never taken anything less than honors classes, have been enrolled in three AP classes and plan to take several more during my senior year.

My unweighted GPA is a 3.9 out of 4

As of now I am among the top 10 students in my class.

1370 out of 1600 on SAT (CR- 720 and M- 650). 2000 out of 2400. (I still have time to retake it if I choose to)

SAT Subject test US History- 710

AP World History exam- 4

AP US History exam- 5

Extracurricular Activities:

Varsity Volleyball

Model United Nations

National Honor Society

French Club

French Honor Society

Math Honor Society

Student Government

I am also a black female. I know that it shouldn’t matter, but I also know that they take it into consideration.

Girl! First of all, congratulations on such an impressive high school record! I’d say you are set for being admitted into both schools. I am also an African American female, and I will be attending WashU as a freshman this upcoming year. My best friend will be also be enrolling as a freshman at UChicago this year. But ya, your stats sound amazing. Just to give you an idea, these were my stats when I applied:

ACT: 32

SAT Crit. Reading: 690

SAT Writing: 690

SAT Math: 670

SAT II Lit: 640

SAT II Math: 640

Class Rank: 48/846

GPA: 6.43/7.0

Extracurricular Activities:

Varsity Basketball (Team Captain)

National Honor Society (Vice Pres.)

Future Business Leaders of America (Treasurer)

Principal’s Advisory Committee (Student Delegate)

Science NHS

I, too, took nothing less than AP and Honors classes. I took AP World History in 10th grade and AP English in 11th grade. My senior year I took AP Economics, Calculus AB, English Lit, and Psychology.

I know WashU likes to see leadership. I see that you are a member of many respectable clubs and organizations, but try to get a leadership position in some of them this year.

Also, both of these schools are really, really expensive, so be sure to apply for as many scholarships as possible. I don’t care how much money you and your parents have, being a black girl with your stats, good scholarship money is just out there waiting for you. Why pay for college when you don’t have to?

And the person above me is right- both schools are really competitive, but UChicago has a higher acceptance rate than WashU.

Another important part of the admissions process is your essay and your interview. Of course, a lot of the people that apply have outstanding and impressive credentials, so it’s their personality and what they can personally offer the school that makes a big difference.

One last thing, COMMUNITY SERVICE (at least at WashU), is looked very favorably upon. WashU has this scholarship program called the “John B. Ervin Scholars” program that is based upon leadership and community service, and directed towards African-American students. It is full tuition for all four undergraduate years. I got that scholarship, so if you wanna know more about it, look it up or just ask me.

Oh ya, and I also got into Rice, SMU, Baylor, and UT, so I’m pretty sure you’ll get into those schools if you’re interested.

Again, congrats and God bless!

Washington University has a better reputation than the University of Chicago which is where mostly rich suburbian kids get into. Northwestern is pretty good for law, economics, and similar sciences. Washington University is great for medical sciences and research. If I were you, I’d go with Washington University in St. Louis.

interesting….first of all, how large is your class. top ten in 100 students isnt very impressive. but top ten in 600 students is. look at the “top (blank) percent.” for those schools, you want to be in top 5 percent at least. i think you’ll be fine with that.

unweighted gpa is definitely good. three ap classes before senior year is also very good.

are you planning on playing volleyball on varsity college teams. if yes, you should talk to the coaches of those schools and they’ll get you accepted.

also, university of chicago has a much higher acceptance rate than wash U…even though both universities are similarly competitive. you’re extracurrics look good…but depends on how deeply you were involved in each (leadership positions?).

your SAT scores are high, but not top. those schools are in the top one percent of universities in the nation, so your SAT scores should be around 99 percentile. think of retake? also, SAT subject score is average…nothing extraordinary

lastly..african american is considered an underrepresented minority. and trust me, it helps…a LOT. to tell you the truth, that will be one of the deciding factors in any college with affirmative action (including those two schools). the worst off are asian americans/east indian americans (poor me). lol.

lastly, how good do you think your teacher reccomendations will be? if you’re a polite, outgoing student in class, it’ll only show in your recs and will further your chances on getting accepted

but in all seriousness, i think you there’s a very high chance you’ll be accepted to at least one of those… if not both.

hope i helped..
