The importance of ABET accredidation?
I’m currently going into my senior year in a 2+2 mech. engr. tech program. I have recently discovered that although the school is accredited, the program currently is not. My question is with the importance of being in an accredited program. I have the opportunity to transfer to a different school w/ minimal loss of credit which offers this program w/ ABET accredidation. Is this a good idea, I dont want to get the degree and then find out employers won’t give me any credit for it.

It’s really up to you. If you’re planning on going to graduate school, you may have to take a placement test or something just to let them know that you’re up to snuff. If you want to get a job, chances are some employers won’t notice or care. And if it comes up in the interview, just let them know of your situation. Just b/c your school isn’t accredited, doesn’t mean that it won’t be. Is the program relatively new? If it is then you can’t get accreditation until the first class graduates. If that’s you then when your program is accredited, it should be retroactive…so you’ll be fine. Good luck!
