Resume help?

I need to know how to write a resume to get into grad school. What are they looking for? What sort of academic accomplishments need to be shown? Thanks!

More than accomplishments, they will be looking for format. Make sure you are 100% on the exact formatting.

Name

address

email

phone

– Education – in order starting with most recent

– Internships/Special Activities (related to major) – in order starting with most recent

– Work experience (related to major) – in order starting with most recent

– Computer Skills (Always listed on resumes)

Make sure to keep is as short as possible, preferably under one page. No more than two. No one wants to sort through more than two pages while looking over a resume.

Google proper diction for resumes, and there are tons of books that can help you as well.

Besides setting all margins to 1″, the most important criteria for setting up a professional resume besides relevant text, is “scanability.” Here are some helpful tips:

1. Place just below your identification header [your hame, address, phone, email address] any Conditional Warning Statement such as “Confidential Resume,”Do Not Contact Current Employer,” etc.

2. Always fill-in an Objectives category [just below the Conditional Warning Statement] and make sure that he Objective will contribute to the profitability of your future employer;

3. Select a mono-type font such as Helvetica, Arial, Courier or Times Roman; do not select any cursive handwriting styles which cannot scanned;

4. Keep font sizes within a range of 10 to 12 pts.;

5. Avoid styling text with a justified alignment, keep it flushed left;

6. Instead of using tabs to set up blocked text entries, generate a table and use the column and row settings accordingly;

7. Do not place an i.d. picture anywhere on the resume, this is a major taboo due to discrimination issues;

8. Do not place any graphic text [saved as .gifs] onto the resume since it may be overlooked during the scanning phase;

9. List at the very end of the resume your interests which should include travel experiences, language skills, social interactions such as golf, team sports, tennis, etc.

In conclusion, the above helpful hints were designed to allow ease of scanning of your resume into PDF which can then be text captured for seach purposes by your potential employer. If the original resume was created in Word, WordPerfect or Mac Appleworks, it can be Saved As a PDF file which then can be saved as an email attachment. Otherwise, you can simply use a scanner and scan a hard copy of the resume and then save as a PDF file.

Failure to conform the resume to appropriate fonts and styles as outlined above will result in rejection of the resume simply due to the inability of the scanning device to properly index relevant resume entries.

Good luck!

The first answer makes some sense if you are applying for a job but not grad school. There they want lots of information, the more the better. Yes you should follow any format guide they give, true, and above all make sure everything is spelled correctly — that is a big deal. Academic accomplishments probably refers to any awards or prizes of an academic nature you might have received. If you are having trouble with this you might go to one of your professors; I presume that one or more of your professors is doing a letter of recommendation for you so she/he would be a good choice.

Good luck.

The good news is that, while grad schools might want you to submit your resume, they don’t lean on that as heavily as they will on your GRE scores and your transcripts and your letters of recommendation. At least that’s true in my field (science).

You should contact your college’s office of student affairs or career placement. At our school, that office publishes a whole book full of career planning stuff like sample resumes, cover letters, thank-you letters, and advice on how to dress for interviews and such. It’s very valuable.

Otherwise, here are the categories:

1. Your name at the top (that’s it, just your full name)

2. Your contact info (do NOT include myspace pages)

3. Your objective (kind of obvious and maybe you can leave it out for grad school but you could phrase it in terms of a career objective)

4. Your educational credentials

5. Your work experience — keep it relevant and don’t say “customer service representative” if you worked the cash register at The Gap.

6. Honors and awards (or special evidence of service)

7. References

One internet site continually! you may desire to get your resume all the way down to one internet site, yet that doesn’t recommend that’s popular. you may want to be direct and to the element of the interest itemizing and the organization. A resume in basic terms gets skimmed so it should be to the element and dynamic so it stands proud and shows you have the education and journey for the area. confirm that’s for sure written and has NO typos. Have it regarded at by as many human beings as attainable who’ve journey with resumes and take all suggestion to strategies whether you won’t agree. Take resume classes at your college additionally. people who overview resumes for jobs are very choosy.
