Question that runs in circles??
If you expect the unexpected, doesn’t that make the unexpected expected, thus making “unexpected” nonexisting? Longest and most confusing answer wins. =]

Actually, it isn’t possible to expect the unexpected. Expectation implies a formal and deliberate act signifying a certain outcome. Expecting something implies a certainty to the possibility. The unexpected comes when the possibility or probability does not exist, thus created the surprise generated when the unexpected happens. The more proper phrase would have to be then “anticipate the unexpected”. Anticipation is, by definition, “to believe in the future occurrence of”. It is logical to accept the fact that in the future, the unexpected may happen; after all, it is the future. It is not logical, however, to try to anticipate when the unexpected will happen, what it will be, or how to react.
In conclusion, my advice to you is, never expect anything. That way everything will be the unexpected and your potential for surprise will be multiplied by the number of unexpected things you did not expect!

If you expect everything then of course there is no unexpected. On the other hand how can you possibly expect everything? The human imagination cannot possibly expect everything unless you expect everything to be unexpected in which case you can expect the unexpected without knowing what that would be. Hope that helps !
