New York City Newspapers (ca. 1890 – 1950)?

I fear I’m probably going to end up back at the NY Public Library, sitting in front of a microfiche, but I hope someone might save me from that…

Does anyone know if the New York Times (or any other NYC newspaper) has its archived back issues (ca. 1890 – 1950) available for reference online?

Well the NY Times’ own website search lets you go back as far as 1851, but you need a paid TimesSelect account to read the full text.

The NYPL website has a few electronic databases that might give you access to NYT archives from home using your NYPL card. I don’t know how far back it’ll take you though.

New York State Newspapers

Newspaper Source (EBSCO)

EBSCOhost

There are other databases similar to these, but they require you to connect from a computer physically at a NYPL branch library or the main library.
