Need help deciding on becoming a pre-k or kindergarten teacher. Can someone give me pros and cons of each?

I have been a home childcare provider for 5 years and think it is time for a change. But I am not sure if I should go into pre-K or try to become a Kindergarten teacher. I have found that I enjoy being around 4-6 year old. As they enjoy learning, circle time, they are eager to learn about so much and they have so much to teach me. I was hoping that someone can help me make my descion by providing me with pro’s and cons of each. Thanks.

Get your teaching certificate in Elem. Ed. This makes you more hireable. Then get your masters in pre-k.

Once you’re in a district most will let you move into a grade level, say K, when there is an opening. But with a Pre-K certificate that’s the only opening you can fill.

Hi – I know that in the state of Illinois you have to get two different certificates to be teacher certified in Early Childhood and Elementary k-3 teaching. I teach special ed kids in K-1, who are fully included. I began teaching art – went back to school and got an MS in guidance – worked in a HS for 5 years – had kids and stayed home for 20 years. Then have a son with LD and dyslexia – when my kids were grown I went back and got an MS in special education. So I work with EC when the kids transition into my Kindergarten and they have a hard job. Most of the kids are just learning to “comply” with rules and structure and learning to get along with their peers. There is learning but it is more social than academic. I love my little ones and find it funny that at age 50 I discovered my calling. I love teaching K-1 kids as they are so responsive to learning. That’s my opinion. Many people change careers and I think it takes guts. Teaching any level is a lot of hard work. Try taking a class in each area and see how it goes. Or become a classroom aide and watch and learn. I wish you the best of luck. Melanie

Wow, what a bigot! As a primary teacher I know a number of primary/kindergarten teachers who are male. What does it matter? How could these men be ‘creepy’? Sounds like this radio host needs to deal with a few issues of his own.
