You will learn some words and phrases, just like watching movies in another language. Actually, schools do use multimedia to help students get good models of languages.
The bad thing about TV is that the language you hear isn’t always correct grammar. Besides, learning a language is interactive and requires more than just listening and watching.
Trust me, children in the USA who watch TV for 4 or 5 years straight do not all come into school speaking English.

It actually can help. I always recommend to my students that they do that whenever possible. Having said that, I disagree that you will truly *learn* that language in 3 months. It will take much longer to become highly proficient or fluent. It is a way to speed up the process…definitely. However, it is important to learn the grammar as well so you can communicate effectively and intelligently.

I used to watch a Korean Soap a
while back and after a couple of months
I understood some of the words they were
saying, not everything, but some of the stuff
I did learn. I guess it’s not the most reliable way.

I have tried to watch the Spanish channel – and I don’t think I picked up anything except the words that sounded like Spanish versions of English words. I haven’t tried it for months – I couldn’t stand it that long – all those soap operas! I can’t even watch soaps in English.

Acquiring foreign language properly needs more than watching TV, it depends on other factors: internal and external ones. More input is necessary to get output, but remember you need lessons in that language….
