Yes, semesters are longer than quarters, but this can be a good or bad thing. Great if the course allows you time to digest and learn the material. Bad if it never lets up or is really boring and you can’t wait for it to be over.
Quarters are nice b/c you can take more courses. If there are fun courses you want to try, the quarter system lets you take more of them.
Quarter System: Advantages are that the quarters start mid September or so – after semester students have already began. And, you get 3 in a regular academic year (not including the 4th which is summer). The downside is that you have to move fast to keep pace, studying had to be much more focused and you also have to pay attention in class. Project and/or paper assignments were usually equal to that of the semester experience I had, in other words same amount of work required.
Semester: I got into the semester system after I completed my Bachelor degree. I personnally preferred this system because the amount of papers/projects were the same, I felt like I had time to digest the material, and didn’t feel the general pressure as I did in the quarter system. The only disadvantage was that after spring break instead of coming back to a new quarter, I carried on where I left off before spring break began. The distinct advantage here was matriculating in May as opposed to June.
Hope this helps!

I prefer semesters. They’re constant. I would feel better going and learning everyday. G.B.
