Is anyone an expert on college requirements??

Ok, well my current delimma is trying to decide between two classes for my junior year. I signed up for yearbook, but people are trying to encourage me to take another science class, such as Physics or Anatomy. Athough, i’ve already completed: Conceptual Physics, Biology, an Chemistry. Only a friend of mine told me that Concept Physics doesn’t really count in the eyes of a UC. its a basic intro to physics i suppose, that is required for all students to take. So i took it during summer school before i started HS to get ahead, and now here i am ahead, getting ready to take yearbook and people are encouraging me to continue with science if i want to get into a good college. My dilemma is this: I hate science, and i’m in Marching Band, which requires a lot of devotion. I fear that with the other classes I intend to take next year (Trig, Ap Lang, Ap US, etc) AND BAND, that i will not be able to handle another science class. I want whats best for a college application. what do you reccomend?

To be honest with you…I would advise you to speak with a college adviser, for a school that you are interested in to see what exactly you need. People will throw there opinion left and right, but this is your career path and no one will understand that but you.

I went to UC Berkeley my first semester right after high school. There is a form, its either the I.G.E.T.C. or something like that, which will help you see what classes colleges encourage you to take.

During freshman and sophmore year, this will be the time frame that you take all the make up course. You don’t start focusing on your “declared major” courses until junior and senior year.

Request some info or go the college website and look at the requirements!

Good luck!

Generally, colleges are looking for quality rather than quantity. So staying with orchestra for a long time would be a plus. Being in clubs or activities for several years where you end up with some leadership experience (being a team captain or a club officer) will be good. The rest of your answer depends on what you want to do. If you’re interested in science, you should take more of that but if you think that you might want to major in english or history, it will help you to take more of that in high school. If your high school offers AP classes or the opportunity to take classes at a community college for credit, do that. Either of those can enable you to start college with some credits already completed and that will give you some extra options.

Unless you’re going into a career where yearbook could be seen as a positive thing, you really should take any higher level science classes that you can take. College admissions are getting more and more difficult due to the increasing number of kids from the boomer generation. Yearbook–unless going into an artistic field like graphic design or photography or a field like journalism–will make your transcripts look like you slacked off during high school by taking a frivolous class instead of something that was academically challenging. Admission councilors review courses to see how interested you are in learning. Band should be your one “indulgence”; the rest of your transcript should show your commitment to academia.

Honestly, you have had enough science courses. At this point, this is the bottom line: To get into a good college at this point, the most important 2 things are a high GPA (top 10% of your class) and a high SAT/ACT score. If you had only had 1or 2 sciences, then you would need another science. But you have had 3 solid science courses, so you are fine. Take whichever courses are going to give you the best possibility for earning a high GPA!

If you want what is best for a college application then take the science course for your 4th year. But, there is no point on taking it if you don’t like it. All colleges say they want you to study what you want to study, not because its required. If I was you, I wouldn’t take it if I was going to be miserable for an entire year. But, if you want to do what is best in most colleges’ eyes, then I suggest taking the science. Do what you like, don’t follow requirements.
