Go to your local hospital and ask the head nurse if you can job shadow a nurce for a couple of days. Take a notebook and write down the experiences. If nursing is or is not for you will be obvious.

Assuming this is your first year in a four-year college, the courses you take the first semester are usually transferrable to one degree to the next. Nursing 101…maybe/ maybe not ๐Ÿ™‚ If that’s the case, don’t sweat it and just take the courses. Get used to your school and think about it closer to spring semester registration date. If you are still truely contemplating switching majors by then, you can take another semester of transferrable courses postponing it further or switch your major. There’s usually a career development center on campus or on a lazy afternoon stop by the department offices that you are considering. They usually have a What-can-I-do-with-this-degree type of brochure and you might be able to speak with someone on the spot.

Of all the years that I taught, I only had one student that went in and came out with the exact same career in mind.

Good luck!

Are you having doubts about going to college, or majoring in nursing?

All freshmen have doubts about attending college AND selecting a major.

If you’re doubting your major, talk to your counselor about taking courses that are not related to nursing. Explore the possibilities out there.

Going to college is investing in your future. Attend four years, get your degree—in anything: Nursing, English, Biology…

After that, fold your diploma away and party. But one day, you are going to get serious and want a career. A Bachelor’s Degree is required…..and Voila! You brush off the dust and show them your hard earned achievement.

Well, it’s never too late to change if you want to….have you had a chance to research your options?

It is perfectly okay to go in as an undecided major. The university will usually put you in career counseling (if not you can still find one to go to, most universities offer this service for FREE!) They can give you career compatibility/personality tests and help you decide what you want to do. After taking the tests, I would highly suggest researching at least 5-10 of your top scoring careers, even if you think you might not like it or you don’t know anything about it; you might be surprised what you find out. Your career counselor can help you arrange visits to workplaces or you can Google “US Bureau of Labor Statistics” and read the handbook on the professions that you score highly on.

The bottom line is, follow your heart. Don’t let anybody else’s expectations decide anything for you. You have to live with this profession for the rest of your adult life and it is your life to live, so do what makes you happy.

(and don’t stress; you are way ahead of the game at this point :))

Good luck to you!

You could try doing voluntary work in a nursing home or hospital before you start a career in nursing.Get to know some workplaces before you embark on nursing studies. If you are having doubts then now is the time to make sure you are making the right decisions.Volunteers are always welcome in nursing homes. You would not do hands on nursing stuff. Good luck.

If you truly passionate about being a nurse, you should give it a try. Your still young, if it doesn’t work out you can always do something else.

Good Luck!!

speak to the college and let them know better to switch courses now then later, also if you talk it through with them you may find the doubts go.

If it’s something you are passionate about I think you should go for it. ๐Ÿ™‚ There aren’t many people now-a-days who get to do something they love. ๐Ÿ™‚ Good luck to you.
