I want to transfer to a University…what sort of classes should I take?
Here’s the dilemma: It’s gonna be my second semester at a junior college and I want to make a plan to transfer to a University. The school counselors are booked for weeks, so i’m hoping to find my answer online. Should I take classes that are associated with my Communications major or just take General Ed classes such as Math, English, etc.?
What do the Universities want? Do they want a student with 60 transferable units associated with his/her major or do they want a student with the basic General Ed requirements? Thanks so much!

The answers you are looking for will depend on what university you want to transfer to. Each university has their own rigid or loose standards and requirements for transfer. (For example, the Univ. of California schools require that you fulfill IGETC) I would suggest you start looking through the websites of the universities you are interested in and find out what they require. All universities that accept transfer candidates have an affairs office that you can call for more detailed answers.

Many universities post transfer guides for junior/community college students online. Take a look at those for the schools you’re interested in and let them inform the class selections you make. If you ignore that information, you may find that after you transfer many of the credits at the JC won’t be accepted by your senior institution.

I would take as many general ed units as possible. The class sizes at Junior college are smaller, so you have a better chance of getting assistance from your teacher or their assistant. Also, it is usually easier to transfer the general ed credits than ones related to your major. Most universities want you to complete a certain number of credits in your major at their institution.
