i want to become a fashion designer but the high school i’m going to doesn’t offer any classes. what do i do?

i’m going to westmont and i want to take this fashion design class but it only offers it in a different high school. I cant go to that one because my older sisters are going to westmont too. and since my sister is gonig there and my little sister is going to a elementary school i cant really make my dad pick up and drop off my sisters at 3 different places in the morning. what can i do to help me take that fashion design class? like should i ask if i can have private lessons? i’m only 13 btw. i’m not gonig to high school yet..

Ask if the school offers any after-school classes or classes on weekends. The Fashion Institute here in NY offers me some fashion design classes on Saturdays.

You can also try looking for some local fashion designers who are willing to train you and give you some tips and let you tag along for experience. Like an intern. It may be harder because youre so young and sometimes they seek older but alot of people are willing if you try.

Post ads somewhere, explain your story and why youre so passionate and deserve their time.

good luck

Sucks you don’t have a fashion design class. We had on ein High School, but I didn’t take it. Your second best bet would be the Home Ec classes. You’ll end up doing some sewing and using patterns, which will give you a bit of experience with Fashion Design later on. You’ll most likely be getting comfortable using sewing machines too. 🙂

Most high schools don’t specifically offer fashion classes. What you need to look for is art class (for fashion drawing), home ec (sewing), maybe photography, a crafts class. The best thing you can do in high school is take art classes and do well in all required classes and electives. When the time comes, apply for several art institutes or specific fashion schools. While your major should be fashion, I reccomend doing a minor or concentration in business to learn skills you will need, whether working as a designer for someone else, or owning your own business.

You might check some local junior colleges or fashion design schools in or close to your area and see what they may have to offer. Chances are they would be able to to help or can direct you in the right direction. Good Luck!!!!

No home ec classes? You need math to measure. Sewing to create garments. English to express yourself clearly with your peers, your supervisors, and people working for you. Can you take an individual projects course where you create your own course to fit your interests and just have a teacher — like a home ec teacher — monitor you. I’m a teacher and we do offer highly motivated kids that option.
