The outline should go something like this, if I remember correctly:

I. Introduction (First paragraph) — [You could insert a tentative thesis statement here.]

—A. (Key point to be discussed 1)

—B. (Key point to be discussed 2)

—C. (Key point to be discussed 3)

II. Key point 1 (Second paragraph)

—A. (Main Idea 1 regarding point)

——1. (Supporting Detail)

——2. (Supporting Detail)

—B. (Main Idea 2 regarding point)

——1. (Supporting Detail)

——2. (Supporting Detail)

III. Key point 2 (Third paragraph)

—A. (Main Idea 1 regarding point)

——1. (Supporting Detail)

——2. (Supporting Detail)

—B. (Main Idea 2 regarding point)

——1. (Supporting Detail)

——2. (Supporting Detail)

IV. Key point 3 (Fourth paragraph)

—A. (Main Idea 1 regarding point)

——1. (Supporting Detail)

——2. (Supporting Detail)

—B. (Main Idea 2 regarding point)

——1. (Supporting Detail)

——2. (Supporting Detail)

V. Conclusion (Fifth Paragraph)

You can expand or delete where needed, but remember:

Never a I without a II

Never an A without a B

Never a 1 without a 2

Never an a without a b

ETC… =-)

These are the basic parts:

I. Introduction

II. Causes

III. Effects

IV. Conclusion

V. Bibliography

But you must remember that the outline depends on the topic you are explaining or researching or discussing. More often than not, the three parts I gave you are expanded and sometimes, there are even more topics placed before “CAUSES”.
