Well, what I’d do is list a bunch of significant events in the story on a scrap piece of paper. Describe your reaction to each event, and tell how that affected your attitude to the rest of the story. When listing the events, try to do it in chronological order; that way, it will help your paper flow much easier. Now, once you have that sorted out, you can finally begin your paper. Start off with an introductory paragraph, including the title and author, background information (like what was going on at the time Taylor Caldwell was writing it), and your thesis sentence, or basically your overall reaction to the book. From there, divide up the events into about three body paragraphs, describing your reaction to each. In each body paragraph, you should state the main idea of the paragraph in the beginning, list quotes of the events you picked out, and at the end relate the paragraph you just wrote to the next paragraph. When you have a body paragraph following a previous body paragraph, then be sure to connect that to the last paragraph as well as stating the main idea. Finally, in your concluding paragraph, restate your thesis sentence (basic reaction), each of the points of the body paragraphs, and what you believe to be the point of the story, or how you can apply it to your current lifestyle. You should have at least 4 paragraphs (1 introduction, 2 body, concluding), probably more like 5 or 6, depending on how long your teacher wants the paper to be. Hope that gives you a rough idea, since I’ve never read the book and can’t provide specific events to use.

As you read, keep a list of thoughts, ideas, and questions that come to mind. Does it remind you of anything you’ve read or seen or experienced before? Do the characters seem real and compelling? Do they behave consistently? Try to describe each character that you read about. What are the challenges that each character faces? How do they meet these challenges? Write down lots of notes and ideas and really think about what you read before you begin to write.

Your reaction can include things like how well the reading “worked” for you. Did you find it interesting? Were you involved in the story? Did it touch you in some way? Does the writer do anything that stands out as creative? Does the writer do anything that seems cheesy or unbelievable?

Whatever your opinion, you should explain it and give specific examples to show what you mean and demonstrate your points.

The teacher said “no summarization,” so be careful not to just write out what the reading was about, instead focus on how it made you feel, what it made you think about, or how it relates to your experience.

Well, read the damned thing and express your reactions on paper. How did you feel when a certain character revealed an emotion? Or how did you feel when a character performed a certain event? It’s all about how you respond to the characters and the plot-line.

You could start by saying where it took place and when and who the main people are you now like the climax and the characters and climate and time, stuff like that.

Hope this helps.

You can start by freewriting the emotions you felt while reading it. Did it make you sad, happy, etc? Why? Also, how can you connect it to your own life or society?
