For quotes in which no character is saying anything, you would just start out like you did. I don’t know what your sentence is trying to say, so I’ll use my own sentence.

“He didn’t need to look at me the way he did right then. I wasn’t going to ask if I could come. I’d never tell Soda, because he really likes Steve a lot, but sometimes I can’t stand Steve Randle. I mean it. Sometimes I hate him (p. 14).” You should have already introduced the book’s name and author, so that the reader knows what you’re taking a quote from. If you have more than one book, make sure you tell which book the quote is from.

If someone is talking, this is how you’d do it.

“‘Me and Johnny’ll come,’ I said. I knew Johnny wouldn’t open his mouth unless he was forced to (p. 18).” You would use the double quotation marks ( ” ) to introduce the quote, and you would use one quotation mark ( ‘ ) to let the reader know that someone in the story’s talking. MAKE SURE YOU PUT IN THE PAGE NUMBERS LIKE I DID. If you don’t use page numbers, your teacher can and probably will mark you down.
