You need to get a 4 year college degree related to the field you want to teach (Science, English, Foreign Language, Math, Chemistry, Physics, PE, etc.)

The only exceptions to this could be with grades K-2 in which case an education degree can also be used and might even be better.

Then you need to take some additional class required differently by different states/countries. Usuaully Special Education is one of them.

Some states require you design a class (syllibus) and then student teach an existing class for 10 weeks.

In the US you are required to take the Praxis test for the grade area and subject you intend to teach.

Then you become certified and apply to a school system that has openings and go where they place you.

So you figure you’ll be teaching your first class probably no earlier than age 23

I was a teacher because I enjoyed helping people reach their full potential while building up their self esteem, so they can use their gifts, skills and talents to make a positive difference in the world. It is amazing to me that my students will become the future mothers, fathers, scientists, spiritual leaders, artists, writers, engineers, leaders, innovators and creators of the future. Looking into the eyes of the future each day was inspirational and rewarding. I hope your teachers are good to you, Cathleen. Everyone deserves teachers who can help them shine. Answering your question… It depends on the teacher. Some people do. Unfortunately, some people want to become a teacher because they have issues with power and control. For the most part, I think most teachers have good intentions. However, most people should also work in other professions to prevent burnout.

Do a google search for your state’s department of education. There you will find a link regarding certification. High school and middle school require more undergraduate work than elementary school. Typically you need undergraduate credits in two major subject areas. You will also need some actual teaching classes.

Some states do have career switcher programs that will allow you to get started on your teacher on a probationary basis, while you are taking some “teacher” classes. Math and science teachers are usual in high demand in most places.

After high school, attend a “teachers college” at a University, many of them across the US. Depending on the level of education you wish to specialize IN.

A REAL teacher is very well educated!

A bachelors in Education (4-5 years) is the basic.

Specialized in a subject [math, science, PE] for the grade level of the students you wish to teach.(pre-K) (primary education), ( intermediate education) or ( special skills/ life skills -special needs) add another semester or two.

If you want to teach a higher level or become a principle or school counselor, you must have a Masters in Education. [counseling, administration] etc..

Go look around NOW- many junior colleges have excellent “teachers” programs and the on site daycare is your “lab”. Wonderful first hands on experience and about a quarter of the price of a four year university. Save that for the last two years and specialization.

Now, many professionals currently holding a degree in almost any thing, can get “certified” to become a teacher with about two semesters of college, to allow them to teach almost any subject. Many of these have to “teach” the basics of the classroom management on the “job”, which is not best for the kids (in my opinion).

Best wishes

MANY scholarships are out there for furture teachers, ask your guidence person or look it up.

This is a remarkable job and it will allow you to be a GREAT mother and have lots of time to be with them, more than any other career. I highly recommend it, Its not much money, you will NEVER get rich being a teacher, yet you will be a very happy person.

This question does not have one answer. It very much depends on where you live. Each state (and country) has different requirements). But basically you will need to go to college, get certified, and look for a job. So you need to figure out where you want to go to college. Then talk to an advisor. They will tell you what you need to major in plus all the other steps you need to take. .

First of all, good luck to you on your goal! My son is going to college to be a history teacher/football coach & his girlfriend is going to college to be a special needs teacher. Just decide what you want to teach & go to college. Maybe call some colleges & talk to them as a first step! My sister is an elementary school teacher & a friend of mine teaches mentally retarded kids & I homeschool my son (KG), so we all love it. Hey, I’m the only one not gettin paid! Just Kiddin! Good Luck!

Get a degree in the subject area you want to teach. Don’t major in elementary education, get a real major.
