How can someone DEAF have an accent ?

I was watching a program the other day on T.V. and they were interviewing a woman that was born deaf and has been deaf her whole life she was from England and had the very distinct English accent? How can this happen?

A person who is legally ‘deaf’ does not necessarily mean that they can’t hear at all. Usually a ‘deaf’ person can hear slightly, but it is hard for them. How else would she have learned how to talk? She was probably one of the lucky ones who could hear a bit.

Let me ask you a question… because there could be several reasons.. was the deaf woman signing her answers? Did you actually see her speaking or did you just hear a voice? If she was born profoundly deaf then she was most likely not speaking. The voice you heard was probably the voice of an interpreter. Also, if she grew up in England, she uses British Sign Language, not American Sign Language. The interpreter was probably form England not America, hence the accent.

Interesting question. My mom is 80% hard of hearing and has an American accent when she speaks French (she’s been living there for a while). I’d be interested to read the answers to this question 🙂
